PLANT PICKS FOR 2008
We are always on the lookout for outstanding new varieties. These are some of the new plants you will find at the nursery this spring.
POLAREIS ROSE - Few roses have impressed us like Polareis. Tough as a Canadian winter, this plant sports blooms that are white infused with soft pink, like a strawberry ice with the syrup sucked out. The effect is stunning. Add good fragrance and you have a Corn Hill pick of the year, and this year's crop of Polareis is outstanding for size and quality. #1 Bare root $15 Potted $20- BLUE MOUSE EARS HOSTA - This is the hosta of the year for 2008 and it is well deserved. We've always loved the small hostas, but this small powder blue wonder is far and away the most interesting. The small leaves are indeed cupped like a mouse ear and though a small plant it has enough vigor to hold its own in the garden. For those of you plagued by slugs and snails take heart. Blue Mouse Ears is slug resistant. 1gal $15
- FRONTENAC GRAPE - We have waited for this new hardy wine grape for a long time, but patience pays off and we have our first good crop of this Minnesota bred red grape. It is as hardy as any grape we grow and produces a very deeply colored red wine. It has excellent vigor so can be used as an ornamental vine as well, serving a double purpose when you pick them to make your own wine. If you're not into wine they'll be great for fresh eating as well. This grape is the vanguard of a new generation of northern wine grapes. Napa Valley beware! #1 Bare Root $10 1gal $15
FERN LEAF PEONY - From a tiny root given us by the great plantsman Murray Hubbard many years ago, we have been able to slowly build up our stock of this rare gem. For over 20 years we have been stingy parting with any of these amazing plants. Now we have enough to include it as one of our picks of the year. Its finely dissected fern-like foliage is unique among peonies as are its lacquer red single blooms that stand just above the foliage in spring. Though exotic looking, it is as winter hardy as any peony grown. Given time, it will spread to form a dense grouping that will make people stop in their tracks in wonder. You'll have to dig a bit deeper in your pockets for this masterpiece but sometimes the best things in life do cost a bit. And get used to people asking you, what is that! 1gal $65 2gal $95
