Serviceberry (Amelanchier sp.)
Zone 3/2-8m shade tolerant
Like white clouds, the serviceberry blossoms usher the hedgerows into the spring. Usually a multi-stemmed plant. The fruits are small but highly edible and loved by birds. In fall the flames of yellow and orange round out this native denizen of wood edges.

Weeping Caragana (Caragana arborescens 'pendula')

The weeping caraganas create an effect not unlike a cascading waterfall. The variety is usually grafted on the top of an upright caragana to raise the prostrate plant so it falls toward the ground. We also root cuttings for use as a ground level prostrate plant valuable for cascading over walls and between stones.

Sweet Fern (Comptonia peregrina)

Crush the leaves for a sweet woodsy fragrance. Leaves like serrated swords, this lover of open sandy soils like roadsides. At first a low rounded shrub with deep green leaves, but gradually forms wide mats. Excellent for stabilizing slopes.

Like a hedgehog of yellow, the straight stems are a welcome sight in winter when the stems sing against the conifers. Pruning back older plants will encourage bright new growth.
