Zone 3b - 1.5m / 5ft

Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’

Huge white sterile flower heads that can be up to a a foot (30cm) wide. Blooming for two months, the flowers begin green, turning creamy white in summer, tinted green in late summer, and then brown in the fall. Flowers from Annabelle make for excellent cut flowers, fresh or dried. Well adapted to full sun or shade; perhaps the most shade tolerant of any shrub. Ideal growth occurs in dappled shade with evenly moist, well draining soil.

Annabelle requires little to no pruning. Remove spent flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms. Because she blooms on new wood, pruning should happen in late winter or very early spring to encourage growth. You can safely prune back to the ground.
