Zone 4 - England. c. 1700s - Standard rootstock

Dessert, Cooking, Baking, Cider

Parentage: likely a seedling of Nonpareil
This odd small apple is considered one of the finest by those who enjoy a lively fruit with complex aromatics, the strongest being pear. The apple has a background of greenish yellow but is often speckled or covered by a golden or brownish russet, often having a bronze blush. The tree is a bit dense and needs attentive annual pruning to prevent biennial bearing. This also helps to improve fruit size. About five years to produce, and on dwarf a bit earlier. Shows good resistance to powdery mildew and apple scab. Can tend toward bitterpit, so soil pH levels are best kept around 6.5-7 to maintain good calcium levels. Though not common nowadays, it has remained popular for centuries.
