Zone 2 - 1.5m / 5ft

Picea mariana ‘Craig’

This incredible selection of our native black spruce was found by plant discoverer Bill Journeay. The photo shows the original plant which grows in Kingsbrae Gardens in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. It forms a perfect tight branching dwarf tree that is narrow with a rounded top. Because it is a black spruce, it can stand a very moist soil. Ours grow in a normal garden soil. A marvelous new selection that we feel is one of the most important conifer introduction of the century, though still little known. We produce ours from cuttings, as we find grafted specimens are more vigorous and open and not true to the original form.
