Very popular as a hedging cedar. Grown for its vigor and dark green winter colour. Nigra is an upright, cone shaped evergreen that grows somewhat slowly. Prefers full sun to partial shade, and moist, well drained soils. Contrary to the advice of many, cedar prefers a neutral soil (pH 6-7) for best growth, not an acidic soil. You can often see seedling growing out of limestone rocks.
